Meet Team Mustard: On a Mission to Make You Better
Mustard will revolutionize the power of play through elite level training for physical, cognitive, social and emotional abilities. Utilizing the power of computer vision, AI, and decades of data and protocols proven to enhance athletic performance, Mustard is the technology platform that will create and make widely accessible hyper-personalized training plans for physical and mental training from two of the most successful coaches of all time: Dr. Tom House and Jason Goldsmith. Armed with a proprietary, sensorless, automatic motion identification and analysis tool, Mustard's platform conducts complex data analysis of video captured on your mobile mobile phone, and delivers easily understandable report cards so athletes, coaches and parents can plan actionable steps to maximize performance. It’s a pleasure to introduce you to Tom, Jason and the rest of Team Mustard!
Tom House, Founder
Tom is a world-renowned expert in the biomechanics of the throwing motion. He has over 50 years of experience in Major League Baseball as a pitcher and pitching coach, and has coached Hall of Famers in baseball, football and golf, including Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddux, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Phil Mickelson. He has a PhD, two master’s degrees and a Bachelor’s of Science, and has authored or co-authored 22 books and over 20 studies for sports and medical journals. “It’s amazing to me that all the data I have collected over the last 40 years, and everything I have learned and taught, will be in the Mustard platform,” House says. “I’m thrilled that all of that information will not be lost to history, and that it will benefit a whole new generation of athletes.”
Jason Goldsmith, Founder/President
As a globally recognized high performance coach, Jason works with athletes in all sports. He emphasizes the mental aspects that guide each person on an individualized journey to peak performance in high pressure environments. Jason’s career began in golf, where he coached World No. 1s Jason Day and Justin Rose, but now includes Olympians and athletes from the NBA, MLB, NFL, USTA and NCAA collegiate programs. He also works with world-ranked juniors, amateurs, Fortune 500 executives and business professionals. Jason is also an Air Force veteran of Operation Desert Storm. “Everyone has a physical routine, but few understand the need for a mental routine,” says Goldsmith. “The Mustard platform will help athletes create a personally adaptive mental process so they can be their most athletic self. You can play, or you can think about how to play. Thinking about playing is not playing. So, just go ahead and play!
Rocky Collis, Cofounder/CEO
Rocky is an entrepreneur, attorney, and former minor league pitcher. He is a cofounder of re-inc., a VC-backed global lifestyle and wellness company co-founded with four superstar members of the US Women’s National Soccer Team. As a Cornell University baseball player, Rocky was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2006 and pitched in the minor leagues for two seasons before attending Georgetown Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of The Georgetown Law Journal. “Statistics show that 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13 because they’re just not having fun anymore,” Collis says. “With the Mustard app, we are bringing the fun back to training and competing and giving more kids the chance to get better.”
Luke Collis, Cofounder/Launch COO/Head of Product
Luke was a professional quarterback in arena football for seven years, winning four championships. As a long-time student of Tom House, Luke saw the impact of Tom’s expertise first-hand. Prior to joining Mustard, Luke played football at University of Nevada and graduated from Occidental College, was a supervising field organizer for Stacey Abrams for Governor, research director for John Chiang for California Governor, and an analyst in the California State Treasurer’s Office. “As one of Tom’s athletes, I had access to 3D motion analyses, biomechanical fixes, customized and personalized workout plans and unparalleled mental training,” Collis says. “With Mustard, Tom is now providing that same elite-level coaching I got to any athlete with a cell phone.”
Kevin Prince, CTO/System Architect
As former vice president of Major League Baseball’s emerging technologies, Kevin helped to provide the technology that now drives MLB’s Statcast, an automated tool that analyzes player movement and athletic ability by combining camera and radar technologies. Kevin graduated from the University of Brighton in the UK with a bachelor’s of science in electronic engineering. “Anyone can capture skeletal data, but it’s Tom House’s biomechanical data in the Mustard app that tells you what to do with that skeletal data,” Prince says. “Machine learning algorithms are only as good as the data put into the system, and no one has more or better data than House.”
Marilou McFarlane, CMO/CRO
Marilou is a sportstech startup veteran who has led many businesses, including STATSports N.A. and CoachNow, with a focus on growth strategy, product and brand development and revenue acceleration. She has founded two global organizations committed to equal representation and opportunity for all including the nonprofit Women In Sports Tech, which drives growth opportunities for women and under-represented groups in the sportstech industry. She graduated with a business degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, where she was a varsity cross-country runner. “Mustard represents a refreshing and powerful antidote to the high cost and often subpar quality of coaching available to ambitious young athletes,” says McFarlane. “It’s also a very appealing and engaging brand, which is quite unique in the sports tech space.”
Henry Boulton, CIO
Henry is an entrepreneur, innovator and PGA Tour Performance Coach with an educational background in electronics engineering. He is passionate about helping athletes, sports teams and business leaders to reach their performance potential through neurophysiological training (NPT). Henry's early career focused on the innovative use of 3D sensors to obtain biometric data and lead to his development of the FocusBand, a wearable brain-sensing headset that has helped 3000 clients in 26 countries - including the No. 1 golfer in the world - improve their performance. "I'm thrilled to be a part of the Mustard team and looking forward to the incorporation of mental training into the platform," Boulton says. "When we measure and train the mental process, we can change results and rewire beliefs."
Kielan Prince, Head of Product Management
Kielan is an expert in technology innovations; he worked previously as a product manager at Hawk-Eye Innovations and a broadcast infrastructure engineer at MLB Advanced Media. Kielan graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Information Science and Technology. “Mustard’s algorithms were trained by the most extensive biomechanics database in the world,” Prince says. “As users upload more video, the processing time and accuracy of our AI models will continue to improve at a staggering pace without the need to update the user-facing application, which makes for a seamless and stable app."
Carlos Dietrich, Founding Engineer
Carlos helped to develop both the Statcast player tracking system and an umpire training tool for MLB. As a research scientist at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, he was responsible for the design and development of tools for information visualization and sports data analysis. He earned his PHD Cum Laude at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. “I'm thrilled to be using my data science and AI experience in a project that can help kids all over the world,” says Dietrich. “I believe Mustard has the potential to grow various sports in a meaningful way.”
Lindsay Berra, Content Specialist
Lindsay is a former MLB.com and MLB Network reporter and ESPN the Magazine writer who currently contributes to the Sports Business Journal, ESPN, Men’s Health and other outlets. She is the oldest grandchild of Yogi and Carmen Berra, a board member at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center in Little Falls, NJ and a journalism graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, where she played varsity softball and men’s club ice hockey. “In 20 years of covering baseball, I had the opportunity to learn a lot about the biomechanics of pitching, and no one was more knowledgeable than Tom House,” Berra says. “It’s so exciting to see a coach I covered because of his work with Major League pitchers making his coaching accessible to the masses.”
Jackson Ryan, Director of Research and Outreach
Jackson, a current junior at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor majoring in sports management, is the son of Astros executive Reid Ryan and the grandson of MLB Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. He has interned for the Round Rock Express, served as bullpen coach for the Round Rock Hairymen and volunteered in the Kansas City Royals advanced scouting department. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, Jackson has worked hard to be successful as a high school pitcher, baseball camp coach and advocate for children with disabilities, using his platform to encourage and inspire others. “Baseball is a game for everyone,” Ryan says. “With the Mustard app’s physical and mental coaching, every kid can learn to be the best version of themselves, on and off the field.”
Steve Nelson, Founding Advisor
Steve is a proven force multiplier. As co-founder and launch CEO of Carbon3D, a 3D digital manufacturing company initially backed by Jim Goetz of Sequoia Capital, he achieved a recent valuation of over $2.4 billion.
